The American table is a melting pot of many different cultures and cuisines. Every immigrant brought the cultural traditions and food of his country, making his or her impact on American cuisine. German immigrants settled in large numbers across the United States. They usually settled in communities with other Germans, and kept their food and traditions.

The Americanization of German Foods

Until WWI, German names for the dishes were common. However, when the US went to war with Germany in WWI and WWII, German-Americans wanted to identify themselves as Americans. Names for the dishes were often changed, but the food lives on.

One place where many German names are still prominent is in the Pennsylvania Dutch community. The Pennsylvania Dutch culinary traditions are actually born of German influence. Dutch is an Americanization of Deutsch, which means German. The Amish and Mennonite communities kept to themselves and did not feel the need to rename their dishes, so the German names have lived on to some extent.
