According to Heidi Goodrich Andrade, author of Understanding Rubrics [Educational Leadership, 1997], a rubric is a scoring tool that lists the criteria for a piece of work. Rubrics can be created for the many branches of education. Language arts, mathematics, music, and arts are just a few samples. Rubrics are a more authentic assessment as it allows students to know what is expected of them before submitting the assignment. As well, it allows teachers to know what they are grading for the assignment.

Making a Rubric

Before making a rubric teachers need to identify what they want to assess. Rubrics should be created before the unit to ensure the students are taught the main components. In addition, it can assess criteria from previous units. Assessments should usually evaluate no more than 5 elements for each task. If too much is being assessed it is difficult to truly identify the strengths and weaknesses of a student.
